Back to the important stuff, design is invigorating, an aspect we all (regardless of personal taste) find visually appealing (and not so from time to time). So when we are flooded with new products, we can all readily lose ourselves in the design before us. Yet what seems all the more appealing is the products story, the construction, the development, the process in which an individual or team had to take to reach the final masterpiece. This for may of us is where a designers interests lay. I'm sure you've come across the following time after time; it's the journey, not the destination. A quote that couldn't be any more on point, yet something we all set aside.

This journey has not been short lived, 15 years later Desso and Phillips introduce a ridiculously intriguing and exciting concept between carpet and LED lights. Elements we wouldn't even think to combine, the rule of thumb typically being lights are for the ceiling and carpets belong on the floor, yeah? Well rules are made to be broken, and the Netherlands duo have curated something mind blowing. The carpet is embedded with light emitting diode technology that allows a designer to light up floors with anything from arrows and text to full blow imagery. How does it work? On Office spills the beans..

Final touches are important for such a pioneering bit of kit, as it could be the difference between a dead end and a global success, says Ed Huibers from Philips. “It’s a completely new concept, and patented, but there is competition. Other companies have tried to weave fibre optics into carpet, but it’s been on the market ten years and you’ve probably never seen it, because I don’t think it’s a realistic, scalable idea. Putting wires into carpet tiles will make production much more complicated; if you want to disturb that process, from a cost and scalability point of view, you’ll get nowhere.”

So Philips and Desso’s solution is to keep them separate, with two units developed hand in hand. The carpet has a specially adapted version of Desso’s recyclable EcoBase backing that allows light to pass through clearly, while the super-thin LED panels are built to be walked on, enclosed enough to protect against coffee spillages (without overheating), while still producing bright, sharp light. Between both company’s factories, the entire manufacturing chain is in-house.

Also, unlike the LED strips you see on aeroplanes, once the lights are off, they’re hidden. “In the end, we want to people to be surprised, inspired, guided – they see the effect without knowing what the technology is,” says Desso’s Stef van Ham. “Plus, if the interior is redesigned, the carpet can be changed without having to invest in new LED units, so the product has a longer life.”

Desso and Philips see the flooring being used in four ways: information, for example logos or branding images; inspiration, with decorative patterns and video; direction, with arrows or room numbers; and safety, with emergency signage for evacuations.

It has been produced as a modular system, each module differing in complexity (and presumably cost) to be combined depending on the application. The simpler options are a symbol – a directional arrow, for example – or a backlit film, for a sharp logo image. It gets more complicated if you want a light kit, comprising lines and curves to create whatever shape you want, or a matrix, which is basically a screen under the floor to display the news, or the stock exchange perhaps.

Since the project began, LED technology has improved so dramatically that the project continues to evolve, and the exact details are not set in stone. “The LEDs we used when we started are not the ones we use now,” says Huibers. “They are becoming more efficient every year: the cost is going down and the power and brightness is increasing. If you gave us an order today for use in a year, we wouldn’t tell you what LEDs we’re going to use because they don’t exist yet.”

As the end consumer its so easy just to see the final outcome, and don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with that. After all the final development is evidently what's going to sell. It's important though, to truly appreciate any element of design, to try and understand it's destination. Perhaps something we should all try to consciously do more of, not just in our preferred industry.

We need not panic, welcome the colour wheel. The theory behind how to pick that combination of complimentary colours.

The basics..

The colour theory covers three particular (and logical) areas, these being the colour wheel itself, colour harmony and the context of how colours are utilised. Colour theories essentially allow and provide necessary structure.
The colour wheel, a historic element within design developed initially by famed Isaac Newton way back in 1666 focusing on red, yellow and blue colours. Since those many years ago typically scientists have worked to develop a more 'to date' version. Although varying slightly, the theory behind each edition remains evidently the same.

The wheel itself has a further three categories;

Primary colours (developed traditionally) consisting of red, yellow and blue. The three main pigments that form other colours.

Secondary colours, green, orange and purple. The colours formed when mixing primary hues.

Tertiary colours. Yellow/orange, red/orange, red/purple, blue/purple, blue/green and yellow/green. Colours formed when combining primary and secondary colours. Hence the hue having a two word name.

To create that much coveted colour harmony that will engage a visual sense of interest, we can follow a range of theories, the most simplistic as follows.

A scheme based upon analogous colours. Analogous colours being those that are side by side on a colour wheel. Complimentary colours, those hues directly opposite on a colour wheel. The opposite colour creates the maximum visual impact.

So, evidently, next time we need assistance with injecting colour into our homes/work place we know exactly where to find the answer. Oh and Dulux' fantastic trade card..simply a play on Isaacs development!
Sharing areas that I personally wish to improve and develop upon. Some areas contribute and are more relevant to my professional development and others are more specific to my personal characteristics, needless to say - each equally important.

From a professional perspective I have two key areas I feel need priority development, these being Photo Shop and 3D Modelling. Working within the design industry, these two elements can be detrimental to the level of service provided. Although not an essential for every day work, both skills are particularly advantageous and look great against a CV.

I also have two areas I feel on a personal level too need developing. First and foremost, my grammar. Something I feel I can blame partly upon our email/phone/auto correct society we live and breathe within, however something I feel that by improving would only aid my confidence. Secondly, my appearance. It's too easy to get comfortable in life/work and to really let the 'taking care of ourselves' part down. For me this indefinitely needs working on. I know we should never judge a book by it's cover, but who's drawn to a book that doesn't have some form of appealing facade?

Okay. Easily identified. Now my action plan.

The main plan is to improve upon all four aspects mentioned above. None of the above however will improve overnight, so it is important to remember that any goals we set must be smart*. I mean giving yourself a week to improve serious technical skills will give nothing but a headache. So 3 months, not too long not too short, and will soon come around in a flash. A suitable time frame given (I feel) to develop my personal four elements.

How am I going to get there? Well the professional aspects I wish to develop upon can be improved using a great range of media. Studying books, taking additional educational courses, seminars, online tutorials and basic trial and error. Something I could request from my employer to a certain extent. Additionally my personal improvements are aspects that I solely will have to work to. My grammar similarly to above could be improved by study/testing, however my feelings towards personal appearance is a kick up the bottom (done).

It's far too easy to identify where in life we wish to improve and how exactly we could potentially do it. Yet it's a whole different kettle of fish actually getting there. This is why within Personal Development Planning we ensure that regular reflection and reviewing takes place. Otherwise I plan could be a waste of time. Sitting down on a weekly basis to make sure our actions are being met is the easiest way to reflect. This method also identifies if our actions set are not smart. We can then tailor our plan to a more in-depth level to help us make those improvements!!

Regardless of profession, passion or even personal interests, PDP is relevant and more importantly - vital. The process effectively determines how we each aim to move 'forward' or progress within certain aspects of our lives. Personal Development Planning need not be seen as a weakness but more so as a tool to help improve upon those areas we personally feel may not reflect our strongest of characteristics. The tool also allows current strengths we do posses to be readily identified, a particular aspect in both professional and personal areas of life individuals ought to be aware of.

The typical basis that Personal Development Planning focuses upon is to curate and develop a staged strategic plan. Assessing a individuals current skills, skills one may be lacking and areas that could be improved upon. Each of these then becomes a PDP plan.

Actions can be as in-depth or brief as required, a more simple Personal Development Plan would follow a generic outline:

IDENTIFY
PLAN
ACTION
REFLECT and REVIEW

Having such a plan also allows a individual to asses and be aware of when exactly their aims and objectives have been met. Particularly which areas of PDP have improved at a greater level and those that perhaps need a level of increased attention/further development.

Possibly the most aesthetically pleasing 'spare' chair we've seen. The type you'd happily utilise on more occasions than the usual Christmas Day emergency.
The Frame by Igor Sirotov

Exact forms, cool tones and open spaces. A true example of architectural detailing executed to perfection by Ukraine born Designer Igor Sirotov. The project 'Frame' collates a broad range of textures and finishes that contribute to the modern, minimalist identity of the building. It is these elements that too provide a contrasting dimension, a more intricate and detailed perspective.
When did crockery get so cool? British born designer Max Lamb turns the tables on a typically 80s dining accessory. Quality isn't sacrificed for style either, each item is hand crafted using bone china, followed by a rather intricate carving process and finished with an edgy bisque texture.

The 142. collection includes a handful of other tableware essentials (and we mean essentials).
In design, attention to detail is pivotal. A particular aspect of any interior that can effectively 'make or break' a rooms direction of style. Detail doesn't have to mean intricacy. The most minimal, simplistic of accents can dramatically create the above. Focusing on final fittings when styling any interior space can create an uber lucrative look.
Warp and reason by Richard Brendon & Patternity

London based Designer Richard Brendon is behind the latest dining addition we are ultimately coveting. Bone china may be something we tend to associate with those born pre 60s, yet that affiliation seems somewhat long gone. With the intention of 'warping' consumers perceptions of a typically British accessory, the collection is undoubtedly a compliment to even the most modernist of interiors, even more so worthy of its price tag.
Casa di Pietra. Fiumelatte by Arturo Monatelli Architecture.

Monatelli redefines traditional architecture, bringing this Lake Como residence into the current modernist era. Designed with a vision in mind that would hold minimal impact upon the projects surroundings, here the use of locally sourced elements and natural building products executes Monatellis design ethos.

With a intermix of aged wood, stone and concrete which effectively are age old technologies, it is in actual fact the buildings visual form, the linear geometry and study of morphology that determine its neoteric state.
A true failsafe when investing in furnishings? Opting for an iconic design classic. We love Bertoia's distinctive 'Diamond Chair', although effectively a 1950s experiment, decades on it still remains in high demand. This has to be the perfect addition to any living space.
Unsure as to whether or not we've been residing (temporarily) on another planet, but forgive us for being unaware of the fact that high street chain French Connection ventured into the world of interiors during Spring 2012.

Whilst feeding through Elle Decorations July issue *all be it a few weeks late* only to glimpse at one of those annoying pamphlets that seem to be ingeniously stuffed within the centre spread, you know the handfull of A5s that will inevitably end underneath ones sofa? YES. Not a favourable marketing strategy of ours.

It was on the above that made a google search become such a priority. Only to discover, what the mind had initially conjured was indeed reality. More often than not, when a fashion retailer branches out towards a different industry (no matter how relative) it doesn't necessarily mean success. However, this really isn't the case here. From lighting, to occasional furniture and a seasonal inspired collection of home accencts, the guys over at French Connection seem to know what they're doing.

Providing you're a fan of the heavily coveted 'reclaimed' look, we think you'll love.
It has been almost a year since Heidi Silmane stepped forward and took reign as creative director of Yves Saint Laurent.

Rebranding and criticism from press aside, Silmane has undoubtedly proven that change is good. Having officially opened the doors of the fashion houses flagship store located on Avenue Montaigne (Paris), 'the Prince of Darkness' proves that his passion to develop the brands aesthetics covers more than the simplistic cut of this seasons cigarette pant.
The flagship store extrudes modern Parisian opulence. Marble finishes and nickel-plated brass create a dramatic monochromatic theme. Very much the resemblance of Silamnes influential impact within the indistry.

Our fingers are crossed that Londons Sloane Street store (which is due to re-open late autumn) will follow suit*
Designer Todd Alexander Romano opens his Manhattan 'Upper East Side' apartment exclusively to Elle. What can only be described as a live-in jewelry box, the properties vintage inspired aesthetics are encapsulated within 1,000 square feet of intensely executed period styles.

Romano describes his personal preference for interiors as 'highly schizophrenic', visually this philosophy clearly works. Stunning would be an understatement.
